Health Effects of Mold

I’ve always been a bit curious and a lot scared about mold. We teach about the health effects of mold and you can learn more in the Mystery Symptom Master Class. Mold isn’t something that just grows in your shower or basem*nt. It can also live and thrive in your body, sinus issues and congestion, headaches, and even autoimmune disease. The issues from mold exposure can be devastating to your health and mold detox is a long and complicated process.

I encourage you to become your own gut whisperer and keep track of what foods cause these kinds of reactions. If you think or know that you are extremely sensitive to mold, then you may want to eliminate all of the following food offenders. If you think you might be sensitive, then track and see what is harmful. Your goal is to stop feeding the mold in your body the foods that it needs to survive; essentially to “starve it to death.”

The good news is that there are many companies who are committed to providing these foods to you with the best growing processes possible. If you sensitivity is mild and you wish to reintroduce some of these foods back into your diet, then we have some great companies and recommendations for you to check out.

Talk to your doctor, and come up with a plan that works best for you and your situation.

The Basics

I hope that you are already avoiding or minimizing processed foods and foods that contain sugar. Not only are the sugar cane and sugar beets contaminated with fungi, but they also help to “feed” the molds in your system.

Additionally, wheat and malt have high mold contents. Oh and PS – bread begins developing mold after one day.

High Mold Foods to Avoid

1. Alcohol

Most alcohol is produced with grains contaminated with fungi. Higher mold contents will be in dark beer, red wine, cider, whiskey, brandy, gin, and rum.

Recommend:

Light beer and white wine will have less mycotoxin content.

2. Cheese

Stay away from all cheeses, especially moldy cheeses. Some of the worst offenders are stilton, blue cheese, gorgonzola, and Roquefort.

3. Condiments

Most condiments contain sugar and/or vinegar. Hold the mayo. Seriously. Skip mayonnaise, ketchup, pickles, soy sauce, mustard, and relishes.

5. Dried Fruits

Dried fruits to stay away from include apricots, dates, figs, raisins, and other dried fruits. Enjoy organic fresh fruit instead.

6. Fruit Juice

Packaged fruit juice is suspect and may contain molds. Plus, they are high in sugar.

7. Mushrooms

There’s a fungus among us! This one should be a no-brainer. No mushrooms or truffles.

8. Peanut Butter (and Nuts)

Back in college, I interned at the Reese’s plant in Hershey. Peanut butter was my jelly. I could literally eat my weight in peanut butter. It was one of the last allergen foods that I eliminated but after I connected the dots to eating peanut butter with my nose running, I said a sad goodbye. Other nuts are suspect, but peanut butter is the worst offender.

9. Processed Meats

Mmmmmmmm bacon. Just say no to processed meats, not only are they high in fungus, but also nitrates. These include corned beef, hot dogs, ham, pastrami, bologna, salami, smoked fish, and yes (sniff sniff)… bacon.
