The summer is here, so it’s time for Gemini to do their thing. What zodiac sign says “it’s party time” more than a Gemini? Anyone with this air sign is known for being friends with every creature running down the pike.Geminis never met an animal they did not like. This air sign is known for being creative and possessing a natural ability to adapt to any environment.

The zodiac twins rule the Sun from May 21 through June 21. Some of our favorite outspoken entertainers are Ayra Starr, Normani, Tems, Zaya Wade, etc. These versatile and enthusiastic members of the zodiac are the ones that tend to be the indecisive talkative friend or the socialite ordering shots for the rest of the night. They can be impulsive or superficial depending on the event you invite them to, but know that you are bound to laugh if they are around.

Gemini is the third zodiac sign, and its house symbolizes the mind, communication, and social activity. Its natural ability to see various angles of life gives it its dual-natured persona. This mutable sign rules Mercury, the planet that represents dualism, convertibility, and curiosity. We know what you’re really here for, so grab your morning drink and see what June has in store for you this Gemini season.

The pandemic significantly >Nia Daniel, a student at the Bronx Studio School, the pandemic started before her freshman year. At that time, her eighth-grade prom and graduation were canceled. She wasn’t sure what would happen when she got to high school, so now that she’s a high school senior prepping for her prom, she realized she’s more excited to make memories that were once taken from her.

“I don’t really get to bond with my senior peers as much unless it’s student government-related, so we don’t get that experience,” she tells GU. “For prom, we’re all going to be in the same space, and I already told a lot of my classmates that I’m going to make sure I talk to everyone and take a picture so I can make that memory of the connection that we had.”

Read ‘Why Are There Dissertations About How Black Teens Celebrate Prom?’

With the return of in-person proms, students wanted to make up for lost time and the missed experiences of the previous years. The desire to celebrate and create memorable experiences led to more elaborate prom plans. Many students got creative for their big day, from detailed prom send-offs to luxury gowns and cars. The pandemic’s impact on mental health and the sense of lost time also contributed to the heightened enthusiasm for prom.

Students, having endured prolonged periods of isolation and uncertainty, were eager to celebrate and reconnect with their peers significantly. The heightened emotional value of the event in the post-pandemic era prompted students to go all out. “I believe that some students missing the junior prom because of COVID-19 encouraged them to go big for their senior prom,” says Kenidi Johnson, a 2024 graduate of Arabia Mountain High School.

Social media has played a crucial role in amplifying the extravagance of post-pandemic proms. Platforms like Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter became showcases for elaborate prom preparations and celebrations, creating a ripple effect as students wanted to create their own moments. This digital influence has encouraged students to invest more in their prom experience, from renting luxury vehicles to organizing grand entrances.

Though social media seems to focus only on virality, Daniel sees it as a moment of connection. “People are connecting online, complimenting each other, and giving encouragement,” she tells GU.

The emphasis on community and resilience post-pandemic has added a deeper layer of significance to prom. It became more than just a dance; it symbolized a return to normalcy and a celebration of overcoming adversity. “We put our all in prom because it is a one-night-only experience,” Johnson says. “Prom is something you can never relive, so why not go big.”

This collective effort to create a meaningful and extravagant prom experience reflects a broader societal shift towards cherishing and celebrating moments of joy and togetherness in the aftermath of global disruption. Having spent significant time apart due to lockdowns and remote learning, students have developed a newfound appreciation for in-person interactions and the joy of coming together. “Everyone was behind a screen and they were reserved, to themselves and isolated, so when you have events like prom or graduation, you get to break out of that and be engaged with everybody and have some fun,” Daniel tells GU.

As we welcome June, the inaugural month of summer, let’s explore some of our favorite outfit inspirations for the warm weather. Sundresses are gradually taking over our timelines, and we love them. Their vibrant shapes, colors, and fabrics beautifully highlight melanin. While summer often brings sunny weather and clear blue skies to coastal cities, it can get quite windy, especially in the evenings. A chic way to stay cozy when the breeze hits is by layering an oversized men’s button-up. Whether worn over a bikini or denim shorts, it looks effortless. Editor Indya Brown sported a pinstriped version while waiting for her street tacos.

Whether it’s an evening gown, a mini dress, or a flowy sundress, we are officially in the season of the dress. Not only does it make you look chic, but being able to throw on one piece and run out the door simplifies getting dressed immensely. Dresses also provide breathability and comfort, perfect for the summertime. Take a nod from model Memu for an evening gown, Eliana for a daytime sundress, and Podcaster Kimberly Ndubizu for the perfect mini.

You can never go wrong with athleisure. This is the season of girly sports like tennis and golf. So throw on your favorite two-piece set or tennis skirt and go for a hot girl walk with your girls or engage in a competitive game of tennis. Draw inspiration from model Juliana Nalu for the perfect fit to break a sweat. Let’s be honest; Instagram can be the best place to find your next outfit. Gen Z athletes are >Naomi Osaka, who champions racial equality and mental health awareness, to NFL player JuJu Smith-Schuste, who engages fans on TikTok to build a robust personal brand.

These athletes also bridge the gap between traditional sports and Esports, with figures like Zaqueri “Aphromoo” Black gaining significant fame in the esports arena. Esports, or electronic sports, refers to competitive video gaming where individuals or teams compete for prizes and recognition in various video game titles. Black won the 2018 NA LCS Spring Split with the 100 Thieves and earned the title of MVP for the split. Through their multifaceted approach, Zillennials are making sports more potent. One of the most significant developments in college sports this year has been the surge in name, image, and likeness (NIL) deals.

However, in March of 2024, the NCAA announced a halt on these deals, citing concerns over fairness and compliance with amateurism principles. The antitrust lawsuit contests the NCAA’s rules against recruiting incentives, arguing that they restrict athletes from capitalizing on their fame and celebrity. The NIL agreements provide college athletes with exposure and offer economic support. Girls United spoke to three college athletes redefining the face of sports: Chris Robinson, Jordan Rosier, and Kendall Jackson. Their perspectives highlight their respective sports and the impact on their lives and communities, challenging long-held narratives about who belongs in the industry.

Article Archive - Girls United (10)

Robinson is a standout track and field athlete at the University of Alabama. He was raised in a low-income household and faced an uncertain future after high school. However, track and field provided him with a beacon of hope. “Growing up in a low-income household with my mom and brothers, it was hard knowing what the next move was after high school,” Robinson says. “Track not only gave me the opportunity to attend college debt-free but also allowed me to show my little brothers and others watching my journey that there is another >reported experiencing financial difficulties, highlighting sponsorships’ crucial role in enhancing the economic well-being of college athletes. With the NCAA’s changes allowing athletes to profit from NIL, student-athletes have seen a significant increase in financial opportunities. In 2023, the NIL market was estimated to be worth around $1 billion, with the average Division I athlete earning between $1,000 to $10,000 annually from sponsorships and endorsem*nts. High-profile athletes, particularly in football and basketball, can earn even more, with some securing deals worth over $1 million.

This influx of sponsorship money helps athletes cover tuition and living expenses and provides them with financial stability and the means to invest in their future careers. Robinson emphasized the significant impact of social media in thisdecoding="async" src="https://girlsunited.essence.com/wp-content/uploads/2024/05/thumbnail_BB14472A-0827-47BA-B9E1-4FF617D42393.jpeg" alt="How Gen Z Athletes Are Redefining Sports" width="400" height="225" />

While it’s crucial to recognize the economic strides occurring in college sports, it’s equally important to acknowledge the notable growth in representation for women, particularly in women’s basketball, over the past year. University of South Alabama basketball player Jordan Rosier comes from a family of athletes; all three of her siblings earned scholarships to play sports at the collegiate level. Witnessing multiple generations of athletes before her, she is ecstatic about the increasing recognition and equal pay for women’s basketball.

“Gen Z female athletes are finally standing up and using their voices to show fans around the world that we matter too,” Rosier says. “Just because we can’t dunk a basketball or jump as high as men doesn’t mean our sports are any less interesting or important to watch. Since these changes in women’s sports, there have been record-breaking numbers everywhere, showcasing significant growth.”

An estimated 18.9 million viewers watched the NCAA Women’s Basketball National Championship. In contrast, the Men’s College Basketball National Championship on Monday, April 8, between the University of Connecticut and Purdue drew approximately 14.8 million viewers, almost 4 million fewer than the women’s championship. This marks the first instance in NCAA tournament history where the viewership of the women’s championship game surpassed that of the men’s.

A post shared by Kendall Jackson (@kendall.jackson10)

“The increase in interest from a new audience has not only helped highlight the financial struggles that women athletes still face today but the social battles women must endure in contrast to men,” she says. “It’s not enough for a woman to simply be an amazing athlete; viewers go on to critique her every action on and off the court. A woman who talks “trash” to her opponents is labeled as having a “bad attitude,” meanwhile a man is labeled “passionate.”

This may be partly due to how women’s sports were previously viewed. The previous lack of advertisem*nt and exposure to the women’s game created a narrative that women’s sports are “boring” or that women are not as talented. Kendall Jackson is a golf player at Howard University. On May 8, she secured the 2024 PGA Works Collegiate Championship (PWCC) Individual Title with a final-round performance of 1-over par (73). Jackson is passionate about representation in her sport and constantly asks: “Why do sports always have to be separated by gender? Why can’t sports be sports?”

“Growing up, I played a lot of male-dominated sports,” she says. “I think the mindset that kept me going was that girls can do anything a male can, if not better. We need to make sure we give little girls as many options to participate in sports as we give little boys.”

Among all golf professionals, eight percent are women, while nine percent are Black or African American. “There were not a lot of women playing golf, so I felt like I was one of one,” she says. “Thanks to social media, I feel like little Black girls can see what representation in golf looks like whether that is looking at my page.”

As these collegiate athletes redefine sports for a new era, they build upon the legacy of former athletes who broke barriers and set the stage for change.

About 70 years ago, the U.S. Supreme Court’s ruling in Brown v. The Board of Education dismantled the barriers of racial segregation in schools, profoundly impacting many African American students, including my grandmother. In the fall of 1965 in Ocala, Florida, 12 Black children, including my grandmother Lillie Tuggerson, bore witness to the >Government Accountability Office, during the 2020-2021 school year, over a third of students (about 18.5 million) attended schools where 75 percent or more of the students were of a single race or ethnicity. This issue is exacerbated by school district boundaries, which often dictate student enrollment and perpetuate segregation along racial and ethnic lines.

For many young Zillennials who may be voting for the first time, many can’t help but wonder if the challenges we face today are a troubling echo of the past. With assaults on diversity, equity, and inclusion (DE&I) initiatives, reproductive rights, and affirmative action, this upcoming election feels more pivotal than ever before. For students attending Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCU), civic engagement is not just encouraged; it’s part of our institutional fabric. In the 2020 election, Spelman graduate Stacy Abrams orchestrated a historic voter turnout in Georgia, a feat that significantly contributed to the Biden-Harris victory.

Additionally, her efforts led to the election of Democratic U.S. senators from Georgia, marking a historic moment as Morehouse alumnus Raphael Warnock and the first Jewish senator from Georgia, Jon Ossoff, were sent to the Senate. The significant influence that Kamala Harris and female voters had on my decision to pursue my illustrious institution cannot be overlooked.

Vice President Kamala Harris, whose journey inspired me to attend Howard University, epitomizes the >Julianna Boye said that navigating a world with changing policies is not easy, but attending an HBCU gave her the space to advocate for important issues. “Navigating the intersectionality of being a Black woman in America is no easy task when every day, it seems as if people in our country are trying to take away our freedoms,” Boye tells GU. “HBCUs provide environments where Black students can form an identity rooted in activism, and they are crucial bastions of empowerment by merely existing.”

The federal government’s money is undoubtedly used to support important programs at these schools. Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University student and Chief of Staff of the Florida Student Association Elijah Hooks said that the DE&I policies have affected programs at FAMU.“Recently, with the new policies regarding DEI, FAMU Student government was no longer allowed to have our Diversity, Equity and Inclusion department,” Hooks says. “This has affected our process in ensuring our school can keep its diversity, be equitable, and promote inclusion campus wide on behalf of students. As well as other various funding lines throughout the University that handled DEI.”

In contrast, on March 1, 2024. The University of Florida closed its Chief Diversity Officer’s office, eliminated DEI roles, and terminated DEI-focused contracts to comply with Florida Board of Governors regulations. With our rights on the line, there are things, as HBCU students, we cannot ignore, like the funding of our schools and attacks on reproductive rights. President Biden announced during his speech at the Morehouse College commencement ceremony that his administration had committed $16 billion to HBCUs. In contrast, Trump’s pledge to these institutions amounted to only $1 billion over the span of four years. North Carolina A&T student Kylie Rice emphasized the importance of HBCU student voting, highlighting its critical role in supporting their institutions.

“I believe students at HBCUs must be involved in the political process,” she says. “Specifically, [North Carolina A&T] is a public state school, so lawmakers and elected representatives directly influence state legislation and funding. If we do not vote and get involved in the political process, decisions are being made on our behalf without our input.”

With 64 percent of the students at HBCUs being women, it’s evident that they will likely align with the many women who prioritize reproductive rights issues. In today’s political landscape, abortion stands as a deeply polarizing issue between presidential candidates. Progressives typically champion abortion rights, emphasizing women’s autonomy and access to safe procedures. Conversely, conservatives often prioritize restrictions on abortion, citing concerns about the sanctity of life.

The emotionality and historicity of women’s advancements have evolved surely and have come with painstaking sacrifices. The November election must be weaponized as a chance to salvage Roe v. Wade. As students, we can shape history and demand equitable voting rights from our state authorities. If we remain comfortable, we relinquish our opportunity to influence democracy. Let us remember Frederick Douglass’s statement, “The price of freedom is eternal vigilance.” No doubt, for today’s generation, that means voting.
