2 Suspension Noise problem of the 2017 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 10/03/2020

Rear control arm bushings have worn out after only 40,000 miles causing a popping noise in the rear suspension. I was told this would need replaced every 30,000 to 40,000 miles to prevent damage to the control arm. Popping could be heard the most when first taking off in either reverse or drive.

4 Suspension Noise problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 01/01/2020

There are several hundred complaints online about a thumping noise coming from rear of 2016-2018 chevy Malibu of all trim types, particularly at low speeds or when one side of rear of vehicle goes over small bumps. Gm put out a service bulletin recommending that dealerships and service technicians add a washer to top of both rear shocks and possibly replace rear suspension knuckles. Many dealerships give customers the runaround, requiring them to pay for diagnostic fees and repairs, performing other repairs and replacements that do no fix the problem, and telling customers to just deal with it. This rear knuckle part is on a national back order, causing delays of approximately 6 months for the safe and timely repair of this issue. Without these washers on the rear shocks, the top of the shock makes physical contact with the bottom of the strut mount, causing the suspension knuckle to fail, which then causes bushings to fail. This is a very serious safety hazard that Chevrolet is largely ignoring.

5 Suspension Noise problem of the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 09/03/2019

The rear suspension of our car started making a metallic popping noise when we drove over bumps or accelerated from a traffic light. The sound also occurred when someone sat in the rear seat with the car parked. Integrity Chevrolet of chattanooga, TN determined that both knuckles in the rear suspension needed to be replaced. The service writer told me that if this had been left unaddressed, it could cause a safety issue as there was metal rubbing against metal.

7 Suspension Noise problem of the 2010 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/22/2012

Upon accelerating from a parking lot to the road I heard a loud bang from the rear of the car. I stopped to do a visual inspection as it sounded like it came from the rear suspension. I continued a mile down the road while slowing for a stop sign I heard another noise from the same area and heard a metal object bounce under the car and down the road. I recovered a piece of a broken spring that had come from my right rear suspension. I went directly to the chevy dealer and they confirmed the failure.

8 Suspension Noise problem of the 2003 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 03/05/2012

I am currently experiencing loss of steering and suspension performance with my vehicle including significant loss of tire tread for my vehicle. The vehicle bounces and makes screeching sounds while steering a curve on the road. The vehicle was inspected in early March and no mechanical problem was observed or detected. A 4 wheel alignment was also done at a Chevrolet dealer a few months back and no problems were found or detected then. I have reason to believe that something is wrong with the mechanical operation of either the steering or suspension component of the vehicle. Kindly investigate and look into this problem. Thank you.

9 Suspension Noise problem of the 2006 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 02/06/2012

I have been repetitively turned away by various gm dealerships to address serious issues with my vehicle & potential recalls. My issues include - steering malfunctions making the vehicle difficult to control, faulty fuel pump sending unit causing check engine light to illuminate & vehicle to stall, uncontrollable vibrations when breaking at high speeds nearly causing me to wreck, popping sounds in the suspension system, and finally unexplained electrical malfunctions such as radio switching channels on its own, failure of keyless entry system, failure of remote entry system, buzzing of lights when dimming, and flickering of headlights. I have been told by dealerships that because my vehicle is a "fleet car" that it does not qualify for any recalls. Problems began while under warranty. Steering wiring harness was replaced while under warranty. At around 65,000 miles, systems began to fail despite my regular care of the vehicle which I have documented. After warranty expired, I was routinely turned down for recall inspections. A recent emissions inspection caused concern by the mechanic over the steering of the vehicle and I was encouraged to address these problems again. I cannot afford a new car.

10 Suspension Noise problem of the 2009 Chevrolet Malibu

Failure Date: 12/10/2009

Purchased this vehicle brand new from dealer in June of 2009. 1st time I heard clunking noise from front suspension only when the temps drop below 50 degrees. Once car warmed up, the noise would go away. Sounded like a broken stabilizer link. Returned car to dealer and had to leave overnight so they can hear the noise, only problem was that the dealer could hear the noise when cold, but sound noise would be gone by the time they got the car on the lift. Once the sound was gone they had no clue as to where the noise started from. Returned to the dealer roughly 7 times over 3 year period, now the warranty is over. Dealer did replace links, struts, steering rack, steering intermediate shaft and a slew of other parts which I have documented. Now I have the car for 5 years and yes the noise is still there each winter morning below 50 degrees. Once the warmer weather arrives, it never makes a sound. My understanding is that a lot of gm cars all have the same "clunking" sound in front suspension. Only thing I can think of is that the dealer parts are all defective and maybe an aftermarket part may be upgraded to help eliminate the noise. As for now, I just live with it as I feel no wobbly effects or unsafe condition.
