ACraving a bowl of miso soup? With just three simple ingredients, you can easily make your own delicious miso soup at home. Follow this easy recipe and enjoy a flavourful meal!
Once you know how simple it is to make this easy miso soup recipe, you are going to make it ALL the time! Quick, buy some miso paste and let's get started.
Ingredients in Miso Soup
To make a traditional miso soup you'll need miso paste, dashi (or broth) and a few toppings such as green onion, mushrooms, etc. The amounts can be adjusted to your liking.
A traditional miso soup recipe uses miso paste, dashi and a few toppings such as mushrooms or green onions. However, it is important to note that dashi isn't a vegan or vegetarian ingredient because it is made with bonito flakes, kelp, and anchovies.
This homemade recipe is a vegan miso soup recipe, with the main focus of being easy and simple! You could almost even consider it an instant miso soup recipe. Therefore it is not exclusive to vegans and vegetarians and can be enjoyed by all!
Miso Paste - The Most Important Ingredient
Choosing the right miso past is important. The two most common types are white (shiro) and red (aka). White miso is usually milder in flavour while red miso is more intense in taste. The best selection for miso soup really depends on your taste! You can also get miso paste with dashi included in the ingredients, which keeps this as a 3 ingredients recipe for even the non vegetarians and vegans!
How To Make This 3 Ingredient Miso Soup Recipe
Gather Your Ingredients
Before you can make your miso soup, you'll need to gather the necessary ingredients. This recipe is a tofu miso soup recipe, made with the following ingredients:
- Smooth tofu, also known as silken tofu
- Dried Wakame (seaweed)
- White miso paste. For a strong, savoury flavour you should select a red miso paste whilst white miso is generally milder in taste (this is what I prefer)
Follow these instructions:
- Bring a kettle of water to boil. Add about 1.5 cups of boiling water to a bowl
- Whilst the water is boiling, slice the silken tofu into cubed sized pieces
- Add 1 tablespoon of white miso paste to the boiling water in the bowl. Whisk with a fork until completely dissolved
- Add a sprinkle of Wakame and silken tofu cubes to the soup
- Stir and serve!

Is Miso Soup Vegetarian?
Yes and no. Traditional miso soup is not vegetarian. This is because it is traditionally made with dashi, which is made up of dried bonito flakes, kelp, and anchovies. However, the good news is that this simple recipe is vegetarian and vegan! I simply use water and miso paste.
Can You Make Miso Soup With Water?
Yes! I make this simple 3 ingredient recipe with just water. However, a traditional Miso Soup recipe does use a dashi broth. If you want to keep this a 3 ingredient recipe but still use a dashi broth, you can actually buy miso paste that already has dashi. I would recommend that you do this if you aren't too keen on just the water, tofu, and wake combo.
Why is Miso So Good For You?
Miso paste is actually a fermented soybean product, containing millions of beneficial bacteria known as probiotics. This means that it can have an array of healthy benefits including support for healthy digestion and good gut health.
To maximise the health benefits, it's best to add the miso paste to the boiling water right before serving. Over boiling can destroy the good bacteria found in this delicious fermented bean paste!
How To Choose Your Miso Paste
Miso paste can most commonly be found as either white miso, yellow miso or red miso. For this recipe I recommend that you use the white miso paste. I like white miso paste Red miso paste is darker in colour (as the name suggests) and brings a deeper, saltier flavour. Red miso paste is a great option if you are making a more complex meal like a ramen. I also make a delicious ramen recipe that you should definitely try!
