Having grown up in a Caribbean household where cooking played a vital role in my life. When it came to seasoning my mother and grandmother would often purchase whatever seasoning that was required for every recipe.

Now that I'm a passionate food blogger, I enjoy making my very own seafood seasoning recipe from scratch and you can too.

This tutorial was actually inspired by my Jamaican Steamed Fish recipe. Where I included the same fish seasoning mix that I've made here.

As a matter of fact I do enjoy making my own seasoning blends all the time from scratch.

What is seafood seasoning?

This is a seasoning that is used for all things that are related to anything that is seafood. It can be crab, lobster, shrimp, fish fillets.

It is usually a dry rub that can be applied either directly to the fish i.e Jamaican Crispy Oven Baked Sprats or used as part of a marinade.

There is no right or wrong way of making this spice blend, it is more to do with a matter of individual taste.

This blend is very mild and has no heat to it as I like to add extra ingredients like fresh chilli's or scotch bonnet separately, depending on what I am making.

Reasons to make your own spice blend

There are so many reasons why you should make your own spice blends from scratch.

  • It's more cost effective in the long run to make your own spice blends.
  • It's fun - you can be as creative as you want with them.
  • You can tailor each spice blend, depending on the recipe to hand.
  • Homemade fish seasoning is WAY better then store brought
  • There's an element of control over what herbs/spices go into each blend
  • Homemade spice blends make the perfect gift!
  • They are a lot healthier with no E numbers or additives and/or preservatives.

Having had this discussion with several random people. I have come to the conclusion that many people are intimated by making their own spice blend from scratch which is totally understandable.

Trust me, I have done my fair share of boo boos and really hit rock bottom with some of my ''epic'' spice blends.

The good news is I'm here to help, this spice blend has been tested over and over again prior to blog submission.

All you need to do is follow these simple steps and enjoy the benefits.

I do recommend using a coffee grinder to pulverize each herb/spice that is listed.

This isn't absolutely crucial but you will notice a huge difference in terms of taste when the spice blend is milled in a grinder verses being simply mixed together.

Alternatively, you can use a dry container of a vitamix or pestle and mortar to achieve the same results.

  • Add all of the ingredients to a coffee grinder and mill into a fine consistency.
  • Store the spice blend in a clear glass jar in a cool place for several months and use accordingly.
Notes and tips
  • Double or triple the ingredients listed to make a big batch
  • Store the spice blend in a glass jar, preferably a spice jar that is labelled and in cool, dry place i.e pantry so it doesn't clump together, away from sunlight.
  • Homemade spice blends have a long shelf life so can be stored for at least several months.
  • If adding salt be mindful of this when using the seasoning in recipes, adding salt is optional and a personal decision.

Ingredients

  • 1 teaspoon of celery seed I now use this instead of celery salt
  • 1 teaspoon of black pepper
  • 1 teaspoon of onion powder
  • 1 teaspoon of garlic powder
  • 1 teaspoon of paprika
  • ½ teaspoon of coriander
  • ½ teaspoon of dried thyme
  • 1 teaspoon of himalayan pink salt

      Hi Diane, it is recommended because all of the spices will complement each other a lot better in their ground form. However, it's not crucial so you can easily mix the herbs and spices together without the use of a spice/coffee grinder without any issues. I hope that helps!

    This was the right mix of spices. Great on shrimp. I only used 1/2 teaspoon of Pink Himalayan Salt and that was perfect for my taste.
