Is the United States on high alert? ›

The United States Homeland Security Advisory System Threat Level is currently at yellow ("elevated"), indicating a "significant risk of terrorist attacks".

We define how we will work together to best meet needs in each of the five mission areas: Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response and Recovery.

Current thinking defines four phases of emergency management: mitigation, preparedness, response, and recovery.

It uses a scale of five threat levels: not expected, possible, probable, expected, and certain. Australia's current National Terrorism Threat Level is probable. The probable level advises there is a greater than fifty per cent chance of an onshore attack or attack planning in the next twelve months.

The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) released the 2024 Homeland Threat Assessment, which continues to identify a high risk of foreign and domestic terrorism in 2024.

These alerts are broadcast through radio, TV, road signs, cellphones, and other data-enabled devices. The AMBER Alert system is being used in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Indian country, Puerto Rico, the U.S. Virgin Islands, and 27 other countries.

Core capabilities are essential for the execution of each of the five mission areas: Prevention, Protection, Mitigation, Response, and Recovery (see Table 1).

What is the difference between an “emergency” and a “disaster”? Emergencies are the routine events that local police, fire and emergency medical service personnel handle on a day to day basis. Disasters are events that require more resources than a local jurisdiction has and will therefore require outside assistance.

United States Travel Advisory System Overview

The level numbers advise the following: Level 1 - Exercise Normal Precautions, Level 2 - Exercise Increased Caution, Level 3 – Reconsider Travel, Level 4 - Do Not Travel. Countries assigned a Travel Advisory level of 2 or more will also be assigned a risk indicator.
