It’s safe to say that few people cite air travel as their favorite activity. There’s the cost, the anxiety of making it to your plane on time, the crowded conditions, the annoying people around you, the list goes on and on. In the olden times, airlines would at least provide travelers with a bevy of food options, but this has largely gone out of fashion as the companies have tightened their belts. These days, you’re most likely to get a complimentary drink and a choice between a small sweet or savory snack. On a recent flight I was on, they offered “chocolate” as one of the options. It turned out to be a quinoa crisp with chocolate (really stretching the definition of “chocolate” if you ask me).
The old standbys of a small bag of pretzels or snack mix aren’t exactly thrilling. So while it may be damning with faint praise, the best onboard snack you’re likely to encounter is a Biscoff cookie.
But what are Biscoff cookies, exactly?
Biscoff cookies are thick, crunchy, rectangular cookies flavored with cinnamon. According to the makers of Lotus Biscoff, “For many, it’s their cup of coffee’s best companion. For others, it’s an irresistible treat on its own.” The name, Biscoff, comes from “biscuit” and “coffee,” and indeed, many enjoy this uniquely delicious treat with a cup of joe.
What does Biscoff taste like?
It’s a little hard to define, but I’d describe it as having a creamy, caramelized, ginger-snappish quality. The flavor profile is actually quite distinct, and because of that, Lotus has branched off into other areas, such as frozen treats, chocolates, and biscoff spread.
What is biscoff spread? How about biscoff cookie butter?
I am happy to report they are in fact the same thing. As Lotus Biscoff explains on their website, Biscoff cookie butter was originally invented because Belgian people kept eating the cookies on bread, as if it were already a spread. So, one woman had the brilliant idea to actually make a spreadable version of the cookie and it took off.
Is biscoff vegan?
Yes! There are no animal ingredients anywhere to be found in this little cookie.
Does biscoff have nuts?
Nope! No nut products either. This is a treat that can be enjoyed even by many with dietary restrictions, so you can see why airlines are partial to handing them out. And just to be clear, you don’t have to be airborne to enjoy these items—they’re available at most grocery stores for on-the-ground snacking and coffee-dunking too.
