CHENNAI: India levies world’s highest import duties on all Covid-19 products, including test kits, swabs and viral transport media, sterilization products, disinfectants, equipment protection, infrared thermometers and inputs for vaccine production that make both Covid-19 treatments and vaccines more expensive.
A study by researchers at the Indira Gandhi Development Research Institute in Mumbai shows that the import duty on all Covid-related products is 15.2%, which is twice that of China and seven times more compared to the United States and 60% more compared to low-income countries. like Afghanistan and Bangladesh. Tariffs on Covid test kits, inputs for vaccine production, disinfectants and protective clothing are also significantly higher than in other countries and for some products the import duties are several times higher. .

Indian imports of essential and vital products such as infrared thermometers (670%), protective clothing (142%), ventilators (117%), oxygen flow meters and tubes (72%), gas cylinders for oxygen (70%), and test kits (66%), recorded the fastest growth between April 2020 and February 2021 compared to the same period last year.
In April 2021, the government removed basic tariffs on the import of oxygen, Covid vaccines, and oxygen-related equipment. However, tariffs are still levied on a range of products. The exemption is only valid for three months.
