Why do my candles crack when setting soy wax? ›

Cracking. Finding a very thin crack in a circle about 1" from the wick is common. This is caused by the combination of the wax shrinking slightly as it cools and tiny air bubbles stuck in the bottom of the container. After the wax hardens, it sinks a bit where the air bubble left a void.

Are soy candles unhealthy to burn? ›

When burned, soy wax candles emit significantly less soot and harmful chemicals like toluene and benzene. This reduction in indoor air pollutants makes soy wax candles a healthier choice, especially for those with allergies, asthma, or sensitivities to air quality.

Are 100% soy candles safe? ›

Soy wax, on the other hand, which is made from just one, entirely natural ingredient, doesn't contain any of these pollutants, which makes soy candles safe to burn indoors. They're also completely biodegradable, and any wax remnants (provided your candles are 100% soy wax) should be fine to toss into your home compost.

How do you keep soy candles from tunneling? ›

When you burn your candle, leave it burning long enough to allow the top surface of the wax to melt completely, from the wick all the way to the edge of the candle's container. Not only will this release as much scent as possible but it also will stop tunneling in its tracks.

What happens if you heat soy wax too hot? ›

Overheating soy wax by either pot or microwave will change the chemistry of the soy wax and may cause the soy wax to separate.

Why not to use soy candles? ›

Not good for your health in any way. So that is why we only use 100% Australian beeswax.

How can I make my soy candles smell stronger? ›

You must add fragrance oil to the wax at 185 degrees Fahrenheit because this is the right temperature when both these products would bind together. If you won't maintain the optimal temperature, there is a higher chance that the fragrance oil won't mix, and the result won't be according to your requirements.

What happens if you add too much fragrance to soy wax? ›

Using too little fragrance may result in a low scent throw, while using too much may get a strong hot throw and overload the wax, and cause candle sweating or curdling.

What is the best temperature to add fragrance to soy wax? ›

Add your fragrance at the right temp: Adding your fragrance oil when your wax is at the proper temperature will help it bind to the wax, which will help give you a stronger scent throw. It is usually recommended to add your fragrance to the wax at 180-185F for soy and paraffin wax 200-205ºF for palm wax.

What not to put in candles? ›

Adding botanicals and certain crystals to your candles does just that. Dried flowers can burn and can contain water and natural oils, which do not mix well with candles and can have disastrous results.

Are soy wax candles bad for the environment? ›

Soy wax is much better for the environment. Aside from the fact that it does not pollute the air when burning, it is also completely sustainable. There is no harm done to our planet as soy wax is plant based rather than extracted from oil. Once the soya has been harvested more can be grown again and again.

Do soy candles pollute the air? ›

Although there is no safe threshold for exposure to particulate matter (such as soot) and VOCs, burning soy, beeswax or other non-paraffin candles in a moderate way – along with proper ventilation and indoor air filtration – should be considered generally safe.

What are the disadvantages of candle wax? ›

Most candles today are made of paraffin wax which creates highly toxic benzene and toluene when burned (both are known carcinogens). In fact, the toxins released from paraffin candles are the same as those found in diesel fuel fumes and are linked to asthma and lung cancer.

Is soy wax better for candle making? ›

Soy Wax is non-toxic and cleaner-burning being made with no toxins, carcinogens, or pollutants which means our candles are less likely to trigger allergies. As a vegetable-based wax, it does not give off any harmful byproducts or produce black soot that can stain walls and curtains like the other leading waxes.
